How Fashion is Taking Over the Music Scene

With the close of the first weekend of Coachella comes a lot of style inspiration and outfit envy. Festival-goers (ladies especially) have been sporting carefully curated outfits, making sure to hop on the latest trends and brands to show off their personal style. They’re packing outfits not only for the festival, but for the after parties and pool parties too.

Even the fashion industry is cashing in on the music festival hype and taking advantage of this newfound “season.” Throughout the weekend, some notable fashion brands have hosted their own parties outside the festival, such as H&M Loves Coachella, Sabo Skirt’s Sabo Springs, People Style Watch & Revolve’s Festival x Fashion and Moschino Late Night, just to name a few. Most of these parties are invite only and guests lists range from musical artists to celebrities and fashion bloggers.

Many brands including ASOS, Cleobella, Haute and Rebellious, Free People, H&M (who had a pop-up shop on Coachella’s grounds) and even Forever 21 are releasing festival lines, keeping up with the events going on around the country and all over the world and tailoring pieces to fit the weather in different areas.


“ASOS has a notably international customer base and aims to stock some kind of festival offering nearly year-round, with the bulk of product rolling in weekly between February and August. They tailor each delivery to the quirks of the concert schedule. For example, they push rainwear in their festival shop to coincide with the notoriously wet and muddy UK festivals; for the US and Australian festivals, where bad weather isn’t a concern, they focus on summery pieces.

Then there’s Forever 21, which starts rolling out festival merchandise in March specifically for SXSW. Most of the pieces sell in early spring, though vice president of merchandising Linda Chang notes that, “You’ll see more festival this fall as well, since boho is such a big trend.” Shopbop centers its festival hub page around Coachella, in terms of timing (early April) and aesthetic. “From an editorial position, we like to give it a more fun, shiny point of view, compared to, say, a wet disaster like Glastonbury,” explains fashion director Elle Strauss.”

Some of my favorite festival trends this season include, crochet tops, fringe bags, vintage belts, suede boots, ornate jewelry, funky sunglasses, rompers, matching sets, flowy sundresses, kimonos and gladiator sandals. Large Panama hats and chain headpieces are great alternatives to the played-out flower crowns.
